This LLM program — widely regarded as the nation's best — is for the law student or attorney who wants expertise in planning, structuring, and financing real estate projects, either as a practitioner, owner, or developer. Given the increased complexity of real estate development, pursuing a specialized degree is one of the most effective ways to acquire the necessary breadth and depth of experience. Real estate is cyclical — in the up cycles, a practitioner or a developer/entrepreneur focuses on creating assets — in down cycles the focus is on protecting assets or finding opportunities in distressed markets. The well-trained real estate lawyer understands these cycles and is able successfully to navigate them.Who Should Consider This Degree?
The faculty includes top professors and scholars in the field, adjuncts who are partners of prominent law firms, and general counsels of major real estate companies – experts from all over the U.S. The program director counsels students individually on internship placements and course selection at the beginning of each term to arrange a schedule that provides the appropriate course of study for each student.
The comprehensive LLM curriculum explores the subjects necessary to develop an understanding of:
Visits to real estate projects allow students to learn from the perspectives of experts in zoning and environmental issues, architects, developers, lenders or tenants. Full-time students participate in a lawyer-supervised internship, at law firms of various sizes or with private developers or public sector entities.
Interact with the program’s DIR who has 30 years of involvement in every facet of real estate development to give you:
The program has a board that brings together an impressive roster of C-level executives and partners of major firms representing different sectors of the South Florida real estate marketplace. Through a unique collaboration with our premier graduate schools, the LLM Director, faculty, and advisory board work closely with counterparts at the University of Miami’s School of Architecture and School of Business to offer integrated curricular experiences and placement outreach. This way students understand all sides of a real estate development project.
