As the highest degree offered in law, the Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) program is a three-year, post-LL.M. degree designed for aspiring legal academics, members of the judiciary, and public policymakers as well as for students interested in careers as legal scholars, teaching law inside or outside the United States. The S.J.D. program is designed to prepare graduates with superior scholarly potential to pursue policy work in research institutes, or careers in government service, or the judiciary. Students in the S.J.D. program, are expected to conduct advanced research and produce original scholarship submitted as a scholarly dissertation under the guidance of the internationally renowned faculty at the University of Miami School of Law.
The S.J.D. program is only open to exceptionally well-qualified candidates who either: Applicants to the S.J.D. program must also submit a research proposal and further demonstrate excellent English writing skills. Because the S.J.D. degree requires the completion of a dissertation under the supervision of a full-time faculty member, an applicant must obtain the consent of a Miami Law faculty member to serve as the applicant’s faculty advisor. Miami Law has a rich history of engagement with international and comparative law, a world-renowned faculty, and is located in a global city that serves as a bridge to the Americas. Elizabeth M. Iglesias, Professor of Law and S.J.D. director, received her B.A. (magna cum laude) from the University of Michigan, a J.D. (with honors) from Yale Law School, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of South Florida. Her areas of expertise include Civil Rights, Constitutional Law, Law and Political Economy, LatCrit Theory and Philosophy of Law, and International Criminal Law and Procedure. Each S.J.D. candidate is appointed a resident faculty advisor who supervises the research, course selection, and progress toward fulfillment of the S.J.D. dissertation requirements. The S.J.D. Anyone who wants to get a doctoral degree in 3 years and plans to pursue a long-term career in academia, government, research, or public policy.
Applications for admission are considered on a rolling basis for a Fall program start. The priority application deadline will be May 1, and the final application deadline will be June 30. International students who will need to enter the U.S. on a student visa, should apply at least three months prior to their intended program start, as additional time is needed for visa application and processing.

S.J.D. students pay full tuition in their first year, and half tuition in their second, third, and subsequent years.
Exceptionally qualified candidates may be awarded partial tuition scholarships at the time of admission.
