This Advising Compact outlines the mutual expectations and shared responsibilities between the Academic Achievement Program (AAP) and University of Miami School of Law JD students. It reflects a shared commitment to fostering a respectful, proactive, and collaborative advising relationship designed to support each student’s unique professional journey.
Advisees are expected to articulate clear educational goals and develop a tentative plan of study in consultation with their advisor.
Advisees are expected to carefully choose courses that support their long-term academic and professional aspirations, ensuring they align with the goals outlined in their educational plan.
Advisees are expected to proactively monitor official university communications (e.g., email, text messages, notifications) and adhere to publicized deadlines for appointments, registration, and other administrative tasks.
Advisees are expected to understand and adhere to the Law School Honor Code and the Student Handbook. There is an uncompromising expectation that advisees will conduct themselves with professionalism and civility in interactions with their advisor in both oral and written communications.
Advisors will introduce learning strategies to help students identify effective methods for reading and briefing cases, notetaking, and outlining. Advisors recommend regularly updating course outlines to systematically integrate key cases, statutes, and doctrinal points for better exam preparation.
Advisors will discuss academic performance with students in a supportive way, helping them to understand proper exam review. Consistent with the Student Handbook, first year students earning a grade of C- or below are required to meet with their professor to review their exam.
Advisors will assist advisees in identifying courses that align with their academic and professional interests, taking into consideration prerequisites, course availability, and progression toward graduation.
