Curriculum - Online Master of Legal Studies (M.L.S.)

The M.L.S. curriculum is a 30-credit, 100% online full master’s degree program which offers a mixture of core, required courses and electives.

In the Master of Legal Studies curriculum, students may choose to study a general track, which allows them to design a course of study that best suits their interests and needs, or specialize with an industry-specific track.

    Foundations in U.S. Law and Regulation (3 credits)

    This course introduces students to the legal system and types of regulation in the U.S and explains the legislative and judicial processes.

    Students gain an understanding of the origins of regulatory power and the basis for federal laws and regulations.

    The course also introduces several doctrinal areas of law, such as constitutional law, torts, and contracts.

  • Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis Skills (3 credits)

    Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis Skills (3 credits)

    This course teaches students how to conduct thorough legal research and writing using a variety of legal research tools and how to conduct basis legal analysis through a series of written exercises and assignments.

  • Corporate Compliance & Enterprise Risk Management (3 credits)

    Corporate Compliance & Enterprise Risk Management (3 credits)

    This course serves as an introduction to the growing area of compliance and focuses on the broad role of a compliance professional.

    Topics include:

    • Corporate oversight
    • The role of regulators and prosecutors
    • The general flow of a compliance professional’s work
    • The growing trends of metrics and integrated GRC, as well as the compliance landscape/compliance roles.

    This course also examines risk management issues that impact various corporate and government entities, providing students the opportunity to explore risk analysis and compliance in a variety of legal environments.

  • Master's Capstone (3 credits)

    Master's Capstone (3 credits)

    Students select a Writing Capstone or a Project Capstone performed under the guidance of a program faculty member.

Electives* and Optional Tracks – Choices for Specialization

Students who choose a track select at least 3 elective courses in that track and additional credits from the entire menu of electives to reach thirty (30) total credits for the degree.

    Legal Regulation of Medical Billing and Coding

    This course focuses on laws and regulations governing medical billing and coding in the healthcare industry and will explore legal, ethical, and regulatory concepts including HIPAA compliance, official coding guidelines and third-party payer requirements.

    This course explores legal, ethical, and regulatory issues surrounding the application of AI and machine learning in medicine and healthcare settings.

  • Introduction to Food and Drug Law

    Introduction to Food and Drug Law

    This course explores the federal regulation of products subject to FDA jurisdiction, including food, human prescription and nonprescription drugs, animal feed and drugs, biologics and blood products, medical devices, and cosmetics. It also examines the public policy choices underlying the substantive law, FDA enforcement power, and agency practice and procedure.

    Regulation of Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Research and Development

    This course explores the regulatory entities and schemes governing the research and development of products in the pharmaceutical, medical device and life sciences sectors. The course focuses on the role key regulators play in research and development, the pre-clinical and clinical research process and their compliance with FDA regulations governing all aspects of research during product development and market approval.

This course primarily covers the requirements of the Investment Company Act of 1940, along with a brief survey of the greater regulatory landscape affecting the securities industry and coverage of recent areas of industry concern.

    This course introduces students to the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and how it laid the foundation for present day regulation. It explores the various
    legal and regulatory schemes that govern investment companies and look at the key policies that drive them.

    Broker/Dealer Regulation and Compliance

    This course examines ways in which broker-dealers register with the SEC and FINRA, conduct their operations, and execute their supervisory responsibilities. Special attention will be paid to legal issues that arise in an increasingly complex regulatory environment and the role of compliance and legal functions within a broker-dealer.

  • Consumer Financial Protection Law

    Consumer Financial Protection Law

    This course is a primer on U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Laws, including their implementing regulations and agency guidance as appropriate.

    Students will learn about how these laws apply to different areas of the U.S. financial, legal, and other systems; how they protect consumers; what financial institutions must do to comply; who enforces these laws and regulations; and what the consequences are for failing to comply.
