In today's world, tax issues are inescapable, increasingly complex and constantly changing. The tax program draws upon Miami's unique location – the pivot point between S. America, N. America and Europe – to bring the region's diverse perspectives and career-building opportunities to students. Miami Law's tax program and courses focus on building a better tax lawyer who develops the "tax sense" necessary to resolve tax problems with confidence, which is evident in our excellent career outcomes.Who Should Consider This Degree?
To become apprised of recent legal and business developments in tax, top practicing local, national, and international attorneys teach timely courses, and practical learning is a large component of the program. The depth of the program faculty allows professors to focus on teaching their specialties; in addition, they have particular strength in government service – Treasury Department, IRS, and Capitol Hill.
The program offers strong foundational courses to give a robust understanding of fundamental tax subjects. Electives build on concepts to tackle increasingly complex issues. These give students an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of areas of interest. Students can choose to concentrate their studies in Business Tax, International Tax, or Taxation of High Net Worth Individuals and have this noted on their transcripts.
There is a career advisor who has special training in assisting tax LLM students. This experienced advisor helps with their job searches and professional development needs, including one-on-one training on networking, resume writing, interviewing skills, and more. In addition, the career office offers comprehensive online and on campus services and resources.
In the program students can draw upon the unique tax expertise in Miami – a diplomatic hub and leading center for international tax planning replete with multinational headquarters, international banks, and experts in the field. Miami's position as a leading financial center means there are multiple organizations that welcome students to their regular meetings: The Society of Tax and Estate Practitioners, FL Bar Tax Section New Lawyers Committee, Greater Miami Tax Institute, and South Florida Tax Litigation Association. Students can also take part in the International Tax Conference sponsored by the FL Bar Tax Section and the FL Institute of CPAs and the U.S.-Latin America Tax Planning Strategies Conference organized by the ABA Section of Taxation, the International Fiscal Association–USA Branch, the International Bar Association–Taxes Committee, the Tax Executives Institute, and the ABA Section of International Law.
Miami Law has a broad alumni network, and students are encouraged to connect with other graduates who work in tax. Students can also participate in campus recruiting programs, the University of Miami’s Accounting Career Fair, and conferences, lectures and other networking events such as "Tax Talks" at the law school where alums and local practitioners talk to students about types of tax careers, how to find tax law jobs, and career advice.
