  • ABSENCE NOTIFICATION FORM

In keeping with the American Bar Association’s (“ABA”) Standards of Accreditation, the Bar certification requirements of many states, and sound educational policy, Miami Law requires regular and prompt class attendance. Student participation in extracurricular activities or outside employment does not justify absences. All students who will be absent from class for any reason should complete the Absence Notification Online Form. This includes illness (your own or a family member), religious observation, bereavement, or other reasons. Submission of this form is for notice only and does not excuse the student from the class. This form is submitted to the Dean of Students and your individual faculty members to notify them of the reason for an absence. If a student has questions about the attendance policy in a given class, they should refer to the syllabus. The Dean of Students does not have the authority to excuse any absences. If you have technical issues accessing the form, please contact us at (305) 284-4551 or deanofstudents@law.miami.edu.

  • CHARACTER AND FITNESS

We encourage you to read the rules of admission to the bar of the state where you intend to practice law. The National Conference of Bar Examiners provides information on each state's requirements regarding character, fitness, and other qualifications. Applicants have a continuing duty throughout the admission process to report any changes in the information provided in the application to ensure that it remains complete and accurate. The failure to provide honest and accurate information throughout the law school may result in a delay or denial of admission to the bar.

    • Contact Natalie Nava in the Office of Admissions if you have any questions regarding disclosures or amendments to your Miami Law application.
    • Contact Alexis Martinez, Associate Dean of Lawyering Excellence and Bar Success, if you wish to discuss the character & fitness process for a certain jurisdiction.

  • COST OF ATTENDANCE REVIEW REQUEST

The Cost of Attendance (COA) forms allow students who intend to borrow federal loans to supply documentation to determine if an increase in their total COA is warranted. Submitting a form does not guarantee approval, and denials are not appealable. If approved, the total COA, and, typically, the Grad PLUS Loan offer can be increased to cover the approved allowance.

The Grad/Law UM Health Insurance COA Request Form specifically relates to the expense associated with enrolling in the University’s Health Insurance Plan. The premium for the University’s Health Insurance Plan is not included in the COA. Therefore, students may request a COA increase (and thus additional Grad PLUS Loans) to cover this expense. Please note that the yearly cost of the health insurance is added to the fall semester bill. Therefore, a fall only Grad PLUS Loan would be offered. Please note this form should not be submitted until the cost of the UM Health Insurance appears on your bill.

The Grad/Law COA Review Form allows students who intend to borrow federal loans to request a COA increase (and typically additional Grad PLUS Loans) for extenuating circumstances. The circumstances are detailed on the form as follows: emergency health-related living expenses, dependent care expenses (daycare/after-school care), computer repair or replacement, additional educational expenses such as additional required books and supplies that exceed the current allotment, computer software required for degree conferment, instruments required for a degree program, required travel for educational purposes (i.e., required for degree conferment), and private health insurance.

    • Both forms are available here
    • Contact Anne Cruz-Alvarez in the Office of Admissions if you have any questions.

  • COUNSELING CENTER

The University of Miami Counseling Center (UMCC) provides a wide array of effective multidisciplinary psychological services for all currently enrolled students struggling with mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, campus adjustment issues, and relationship problems. Contact UMCC for educational resources on wellness, self-care, and preventative measures.

  • F-1 VISA/I-20 MINIMUM SEMESTER CREDIT REQUIREMENTS and LIMITATION ON ONLINE COURSE WORK

International students on an F-1 visa/I-20 must be enrolled full-time, which is at least 11 credits per semester. If you are an international student and anticipate being enrolled in fewer than 11 credits next semester, please make an appointment with your academic and ISSS advisors to discuss. Moreover, international students on an F-1 visa may only register for up to one online course (of no more than 3 credits) each semester to fulfill the minimum course load. Registering for more than one online course (3 credits) per semester to fulfill the minimum course load will place international students out of status with Immigration. If you have questions regarding this requirement, please speak to your ISSS advisor. Bar qualification requirements regarding online courses may differ from visa requirements. For more information. please click here.

  • HEALTH INSURANCE

Student health insurance coverage dates for Spring 2026 are as follows:

    • Domestic IE + LLM, LLM, and SJD students: January 5 to August 14, 2026
    • International IE + LLM, LLM, SJD and Exchange students: January 1 to June 30, 2026*

    * International students are students on an I-20/F-1 visa or DS-2019/J-1 visa. International students have the option to purchase extended coverage for the month of July if they stay in the U.S. for the summer directly through the United Healthcare Student Resources portal.

All international students are required to enroll in the University-sponsored health insurance program regardless of credit load. The annual premium for this coverage is added to each student's fees. More information is available here.

All domestic students are required to obtain adequate health insurance (e.g., University-sponsored health insurance). Domestic students with adequate healthcare coverage of their own can request to waive the University-sponsored insurance. However, students with limited out-of-area coverage or otherwise inadequate coverage are urged to carefully review their options before requesting to waive this plan. Starting in Spring 2026, all new (including transfer) students with out-of-state HMO/EPO plans do not meet the criteria for waiver, unless the policy provides comprehensive health benefits beyond emergency and urgent care during the time that you will attend the University of Miami in the Miami area. Students covered under Medicaid plans are only eligible to waive with Florida Medicaid.

For domestic students, the deadline to request a waiver for Spring 2026 is January 10, 2026. Students must submit their waiver request via the UnitedHealthcare student center. Please have your student ID (starting with a 5) and current insurance card ready. Students will need to access their UM email for verification to submit the waiver request. Students will receive a waiver approval or denial based on their insurance coverage within 5 business days of the submission of the waiver request.

Please note that continuing domestic students must resubmit a health insurance waiver request every fall semester.

If you have further questions, please contact Student Health directly at 305-284-9100 or studenthealth@miami.edu.

These excess funds may be used to pay other pending University charges (e.g., University student health insurance fees, parking fees, library fines, etc.), but students must first authorize the University to do so by submitting a Title IV authorization or permission.
