U.S. and Transnational Law LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (General LLM Program)

The LLM in U.S. & Transnational Law for Foreign-Trained Lawyers is Miami Law’s general LLM program. The program welcomes attorneys from all over the world to continue the study of law in a context that emphasizes American common law and its impact in the global economy.

Technically a specialization in the International Law LLM, the program permits unusual flexibility in course selection and allows you to choose courses in your area of interest from the general law school curriculum and structure your studies according to professional goals.

Who Should Consider This Degree?

  • Foreign-trained attorneys who want to learn about the U.S. legal system
  • Attorneys looking to remain in the U.S. to practice law with the opportunity to earn a JD and/or qualify to take a U.S. Bar Exam, including New York
  • Individuals wanting to explore the field of international law outside of his or her own country

    The program allows you to take courses from Miami Law’s extensive course catalog alongside American J.D. students. Each student’s course of study is tailor-made on an individual basis depending on interests and career goals.

    You work with the Program Director who serves as a personal Academic Advisor to arrive at the best possible individualized program and your background as well as future goals are considered. Additionally, there is an orientation specifically for international students designed to assist with the transition to living in the U.S. and Miami.

    There is career advising from an advisor who has special training in assisting international LLM students.​ Your advisor works with you including recommending career fairs such as the prestigious New York International Student Job Fair, which attracts more than 160 of the leading legal employers from around the world. In addition, Miami Law participates in numerous job fairs with other law schools and organizations around the country.

    Graduates of our program consistently attribute their professional success to the network, career opportunities, and knowledge they secured during their time at the University of Miami School of Law. Opportunities include:

    • Complete a For-Credit Internship- gain experience with a prominent international firm for additional workplace training.
    • Take Part in ClinicOpportunities - learn essential lawyering skills by working in clinics on real cases under the supervision of professors and clinical instructors.
    • Attend International Law Networking Events- go to conferences and site visits and get involved in professional organizations to network with prominent attorneys, firms, and institutions in the international law sphere.
    • Compete in Moot Court Competitions- LLM students are able to earn academic credit participating in our International Moot Court Program which travels to in English- or Spanish-language competitions around the globe.
